Good question. It's asked a lot. Here's the real deal on the whole "free credit report and score" question.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), consumers are entitled to a free copy of their credit report from each of the credit bureaus. They can retrieve their credit files once every 12 months and only through the government authorized website found at annualcreditreport.com. Unfortunately, this federal legislation does not include free access to consumer bureau credit scores.

To answer your question, yes, it is possible to get your credit score. But before going on, you should understand there are different types of credit scores. Each bureau has its own credit score. So there's one for Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. They're different because creditors and lenders don't always report to the same bureau. So when you ask for your credit score, know which one you want. You should take a look at each of your credit reports and see which one gives you the highest calculated score.

Then there's also a FICO score, which is probably the most commonly used type of credit score, and thus arguably the most important. There's also two different FICO scores, calculated by the FICO company. Each FICO score is based again on the credit file and history that is used. So there's an Equifax FICO Score and a TransUnion FICO score.

You can get your free credit reports and free credit scores quite easily by signing up for one of those free credit report offers. Do a Google search and you'll find a handful. Most of them are packaged with a free trial into a credit monitoring service. Just sign up, get and print your credit reports and scores, and cancel the credit monitoring service before the free trial expires. That is the only way I know with which one can get a free score.

If you're looking for FICO scores, do the free trial with either Equifax or myFICO. They offer FICO scores for free with a trial offer. I'm not aware of other offers that provide for FICO scores. IF you're looking for free bureau credit scores, sign up with Privacy Matters or something like like it. There are plenty of offers out there. Some offer credit scores for just one bureau (freecreditreport.com), and others offer all three scores. Just read the find print and cancel the credit monitoring.

So that's the whole story. Don't get misled when ppl point you to a specific site for your free credit report and score. They're not really free initially, but then can be. You just need to be careful and know what you're doing. Hope this answer helps you in your search.
References :
I've done it many times. Sign up for a free credit report and score deal and then cancel the credit monitoring. Print out the credit reports and scores for free.

The only "free" with no conditions is Credit Karma. Its a trans union score, not a fico. But its FREE.

Ive been tracking mine with them for over a year. Pretty neat site too. Tells you what certain things will do to your score and how you stack up against others.

Mines 769. In the 85th percentile.

Im fairly certain its within 10-25 points of most other scores so that's close enough for me. And I would never pay for a credit score or even bother with a "must cancel" type things.
----
Edit. Kins WSJ link doesnt work but I found the article and will try the other 2. Thanks Kin
References :
You've picked an interesting time to ask this question as I was recently reading a Wall Street Journal article on this very topic. There are three new companies that provide free credit scores, and according to them, this information does not impact your personal credit score.

The score they provide is not definitely the same one that creditors see, but it is in the same ballpark, or can give you an idea. I've attached the article (viewable online) at the bottom of this answer for your convenience. Personally I used Quizzle and it seems to work very well.
References :
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704252004574459011384380556.html

You have credit history in England. Is there a way of checking that out? You have credit cards I presume and perhaps a current loan on a car. Do you own a home in England? You could offer documentation of your creditworthyness.

Everyone has to pay first month's rent, security deposit, cleaning, and last month's rent. They usually require especially in Los Angeles where so many people skip out owing rent, that your income be 2 or 3 times the rent amount. If you have not offered more than the standard, no wonder you wont get anywhere. You should offer to pay several months rent in advance to make up for not having any local background the landlord can check.

Are you looking in the heart of Los Angeles or in a suburb? Since L.A. is 450 square miles large, and has 85 different cities, the location makes a lot of difference. It might have been a good idea to sublet somewhere. You might rent an extended stay hotel or residential hotel. Some go by the corporate name of Extended Stay America, Homestead Suites, Oakwood Apts.
References :
Your credit score is proprietary information and is not provided for free. Anywhere that gives you a free score is only guessing at the formula used to calculate the official credit score (and they'll scam you into signing up for some paid service anyway).

You can get your credit score for a fee at myfico.com.

You can see your credit reports for free once a year through annualcreditreport.com.
